Javier Camarena Engages (+ Sings!) with Chicago Youth at National Museum of Mexican Art

On the evening before his Chicago debut, Mexican tenor Javier Camarena visited (and sang!) with 50 children and families at the National Museum of Mexican Art. Presented in partnership with Lyric Unlimited, the event included students from Merit School of Music’s Holy Cross Choir Program, Mariachi Heritage Foundation, and the Chicago Mariachi Project.

Mr. Camarena recently made headlines yet again with his most recent encore at the Metropolitan Opera – he is just the third singer to perform an encore at the Met in more than 70 years. On Tuesday evening, he gave a more intimate kind of performance, accompanied by pianist Angel Rodriguez, singing two familiar Mexican songs and inviting the audience to sing the choruses with him.

Mr. Camarena then engaged in a Q&A, moderated by Lyric Unlimited Manager Alejandra Valarino Boyer, in which he discussed his childhood in Veracruz, Mexico, his early exposure to music, and his sources of inspiration as an artist.
